On 16th June 1955 the submarine HMS Sidon was in Portland Harbour alongside HMS Maidstone, 56 crew were onboard. The submarine was about to test torpedoes fuelled by HTP when the fuel of one torpedo exploded. The blast was followed by fire and toxic gases and the submarine then sank. 13 crew were killed and are buried in Portalnd Cemetery.
